Stephen Joseph May
July 1, 1992 – April 28, 2010
Stephen May was an extraordinary young man from Belmont, Michigan, and attended Assumption BVM School and Rockford High School. Stephen participated in numerous school and community activities and sports, was strong in his Catholic faith, and was committed to volunteerism and helping others.  He was the first to jump up and help someone in need.  He exuded joy after every Special Olympics basketball game he officiated, as he loved the interactions with the athletes.

Stephen’s life was cut short when he passed away from a tragic accident on April 28, 2010 at the tender age of 17, just a month before his high school graduation. Stephen was a peace-maker and an inspirational friend to many. Stephen's friends recall that whenever someone was at odds with another, he would always say, "ELE guys!" or try to be understanding, compassionate, and respectful to each other, keeping an open heart and open mind.  He was an honor student and participated in varsity football, basketball, and track. Stephen was deeply faithful and was of strong character, demonstrating patience, humility, and honesty.  He had a great work ethic and was a dependable and loyal friend to many.

Stephen lived his short life every day extending love and respect to everyone he encountered. He expressed unconditional kindness and compassion to all and was an example of those virtues, accepting and celebrating each person’s uniqueness. He will always be remembered by the  phrase “ELE!” or “Everybody Love Everybody!” and will be especially remembered for living it.

“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.”
